Open source Aperture: an option Apple should consider

Big disappointment with Apple's decision to discontinue Aperture, the software to catalog and edit images for the professional and amateur photographer.

Although the software still can be used, its database will not be updated with new lenses and cameras, forcing the users to migrate to alternatives like Adobe's Light Room that will support new gear in the future.

Apple is moving towards more general customer needs, leaving behind the professionals that supported the computer company in the past. What is going to happen with other professional applications like Logic or Final Cut in the future? Should professionals be warned and start looking to alternatives? Well, it will depend if the quantity of professionals using the software is enough to justify the spending on development.

It would be appreciated if Apple open sourced the application so the community could continue with its development.
